Frequently Asked Questions
Embarking on your taekwondo journey is an exhilarating experience,
although it may come with its share of uncertainties.
To ease your concerns, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions
that can provide valuable insight.

The most asked questions

1
How old do you have to be to learn Taekwondo?
Age is not a barrier to starting Taekwondo, we provide training for students as young as 3 years old. Even if you have no prior martial arts experience, flexibility can be developed through consistent stretching and practice.
2
Will students receive a certificate?
Absolutely! Our Ssang Yong Kwan masters are authorized by Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Headquarters, to administer belt promotion tests and award black belts and certificates that hold global recognition.
3
How frequently are the belt promotion tests held?
Our belt promotion tests take place every three months. For students under 13 years old, we have implemented a tape system, where each tape represents an important aspect of taekwondo. Once all the required tapes are earned, our masters will provide the test forms to students approximately three weeks prior to the test. This allows ample time for preparation and readiness.

Q1. My child is shy and physically weak. Can they really do Taekwondo?
Introverted children gain a sense of achievement as they witness their own gradual transformation through training. This process naturally fosters leadership and self-confidence.
By developing the mental strength to overcome challenges, Taekwondo helps children grow strong in both body and mind. It is exactly what a developing child needs.

Q3. My child has been training for a long time, but their skills don’t seem to be improving. Is this normal?
It is a fact that every child learns at a different pace due to differences in physical structure and athletic ability. At Ssangyong Academy, we prioritize direction over speed and the effort of the process over the final result.
We provide personalized instruction tailored to each child's unique characteristics. When a student learns the value of a "never-give-up" attitude and the spirit to keep trying despite challenges, the speed of their technical growth becomes a secondary concern.

Q2. Am I too old (or too young) to start Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is a full-body workout. By engaging both the hands and feet simultaneously, it stimulates brain activity. It is scientifically proven to be an essential exercise for growing children.
Furthermore, Taekwondo is a martial art for everyone—regardless of age or gender. Under the guidance of our instructors, who can adjust training intensity to suit older students, anyone can take on the challenge.
At Ssang Yong Kwan, we offer customized classes tailored to different ages and skill levels. Everyone is welcome to join!

Q4. Is there a high risk of injury in Taekwondo? Or will it make my child aggressive toward others?
Taekwondo was originally developed for self-defense, not for aggression. The core of Taekwondo—and what sets it apart from other martial arts—is learning to control one's own emotions and power while practicing etiquette and perseverance. This is the true reason to learn Taekwondo.
We believe that a person who knows how to protect themselves is ultimately a person who knows how to protect others.

Q5. Why do we have Taekwondo belt promotion tests?
Ssang Yong Kwan provides a systematic basic training program. To promote to a higher belt, students must participate in promotion tests officially recognized by Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters).
It is important for practitioners to choose a dojang officially registered with Kukkiwon, as they are the issuing authority for Dan (Black Belt) certificates. The sense of achievement gained from promotion and the acquisition of a globally recognized certificate are sources of great pride for every Taekwondo practitioner.

Q6. Does Ssang Yong Kwan offer programs for high-ranking practitioners (3rd Dan and above)?
Yes, we offer several specialized programs for high-ranking members. Most notably, we provide an Internship Training Program for those preparing for their 4th Dan, helping them develop the skills necessary to grow as instructors. Following this, we hold regular training sessions and meetings to pass on advanced teaching expertise.
Additionally, high-ranking students can join our Elite Demonstration Team, which is exclusive to black belt practitioners.
As students reach higher levels, they train in more advanced techniques. Ssangyong Academy is dedicated to cultivating true Taekwondo practitioners who balance high-level skills with a character that reflects their rank.

Why should I choose Ssang Yong Kwan?
Taekwondo is more than just a sport; it is a martial art that disciplines both the body and the mind. This is why so many choose Ssangyong Academy—home to the largest number of black belt students in Hong Kong, all training under the guidance of trusted, professional masters.
Til today, Ssangyong Academy has produced approximately 5,000 practitioners in Hong Kong alone. We remain dedicated to teaching our passionate students with sincerity and care. We will continue to strive to provide a positive influence and energy through Taekwondo, standing as the pride of Taekwondo in Hong Kong.
